How an Alpha evening works
Everyone’s welcome, whatever your background or beliefs — and every session has the same simple shape:
Log in from your sofa
It all happens on Zoom — one evening a week, about an hour. Bring a brew, keep the camera on or off, no special kit needed.
Watch a short film
Each week opens with one of the Alpha films — twenty-odd minutes on that week's big question. They're properly made, genuinely thought-provoking, and they don't dodge the hard bits.
Talk it out
Then the real Alpha happens: open discussion in a small group. Say what you actually think, disagree with the film, ask the awkward question — or just listen for the first few weeks. Nobody corrects you, and nothing is off-limits.
The groups are small — the last course had about fourteen people — so it’s a real conversation with real people, not a webinar.
The questions we actually tackle
One big question a week, fourteen in all — the ones most of us carry around but rarely get to say out loud:
- Is there more to life than this?
- Who is Jesus?
- Why did Jesus die?
- How can I have faith?
- Why and how do I pray?
- How should I read the Bible?
- How does God guide us?
- Who is the Holy Spirit?
- How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit?
- How can I make the most of the rest of my life?
- How do I resist evil?
- How and why should I tell others?
- Does God heal today?
- What about the church?
Why do Alpha online?
We think the online version is actually the best version. Here's why.
Your sofa, your rules
It's easier to be honest about the big stuff from your own space. No travel, no walking into a room of strangers — just open your laptop and you're there.
Small and human
A dozen-ish people who quickly stop being strangers. Comments get heard, questions get taken seriously, and the kettle is never far away.
Zero strings
Free, no homework, no follow-up calls, and you can step away at any point. Listen for weeks before you say a word — genuinely fine.
“Alpha was the best thing I ever did. It helped answer some huge questions and to find a simple empowering faith in my life.”
The questions people ask before signing up
All fair questions. Here are straight answers.
No. You can listen for as many weeks as you like before saying a word — plenty of people do. When you do want to speak, you'll find the discussion is genuinely open: it's a conversation, not a quiz.
Not at all. Alpha is designed for people who aren't sure — the sceptical, the curious, and the 'I used to go to church but…' crowd. You don't have to pray, sing, or sign anything. You just have to turn up.
Honestly? Those are the best groups. Alpha works because people say what they really think — disagreement makes the conversation better, not worse. Bring your objections; they'll be taken seriously.
It's nicer with cameras on once you're comfortable — it is a conversation, after all — but nobody will make a thing of it if you'd rather ease in with it off.
Nothing. Alpha is completely free — no charge, no collection, no 'premium tier'. It never costs anything.
Life happens — just come back the next week. Each session stands on its own, and you can always catch up on any question by watching the past sessions on this site.
“I’ll be honest, I was nervous about taking part in Alpha at first. I wasn’t sure what to expect or how much value I’d gain from opening up and trying something unfamiliar. But I chose to do it because I wanted answers, connection, and a place to ask the questions I’d never said out loud. The experience completely exceeded my expectations. I felt welcomed, listened to, and supported from day one, and the discussions helped me see things differently. As a result, I’ve grown in confidence, gained a sense of belonging, and walked away with a renewed curiosity and openness I didn’t have before. I’m genuinely glad I signed up.”
— John, recent Alpha guest
“I’ve been wanting to do Alpha for years but because I work away a lot, I can never join an ‘in-person’ Alpha. I have landed on a great bunch of Christians on their journey of faith; we are a wonderful group.”
— David, recent Alpha guest
