Mark's Gospel

What is my future? And is it good?

7 February 2021 · Matt Edmundson

The future feels uncertain for most of us. We ask the big question that sits quietly in the back of everyone's mind and explore whether there is any basis for believing that what lies ahead might actually be good, even when present circumstances suggest otherwise.

01The Question Everyone Asks at 3am

There is a particular kind of anxiety that arrives uninvited in the small hours of the morning. It is not about what happened yesterday. It is about what might happen tomorrow. Will the business survive? Will the relationship last? Will my health hold? Will I be enough?

The future is the one thing every human being has in common and nobody can control. We can plan, prepare, strategise, and save — and then a pandemic arrives, or a diagnosis, or a phone call that changes everything.

So when the disciples asked Jesus about the future in Mark chapter 13, they were asking the same question that keeps most people awake at night: what is coming, and should I be afraid?

02The Conversation That Started It All

Mark 13 begins with the disciples admiring the temple in Jerusalem. It was one of the architectural wonders of the ancient world — massive stones, stunning craftsmanship, the physical centre of Jewish religious life. And Jesus casually said: "Do you see all these great buildings? Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."

The disciples were stunned. So they asked privately: when will this happen? What will the signs be?

Jesus's answer covered wars, earthquakes, famines, persecution, false prophets, and cosmic upheaval. It is not exactly a comforting bedtime reading.

But the talk argued that underneath the apocalyptic language, Jesus was making two points that matter deeply for anyone anxious about the future.

03Question One — What Does My Future Hold

"As a species we have a real unique ability. We can think in different time zones. We can think about the past, we can think about the present, and we can think about the future. And how we think about the future — well, that's critical."

Scientists call this prospection — the human capacity to imagine and plan for the future. It is one of our greatest cognitive gifts and one of our greatest sources of suffering. Because the same ability that allows us to plan a holiday also allows us to catastrophise about a redundancy that has not happened yet.

Jesus addressed this directly in Matthew 6:33-34: "Seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don't worry about tomorrow."

That is a remarkable statement. Not "don't plan for tomorrow" but "don't worry about tomorrow." There is a difference between wise preparation and anxious rumination. Planning says: I will do what I can and trust God with the rest. Worry says: I must control every variable or everything will fall apart.

"Jesus tells us something quite radical. He tells us that we don't have to worry about the future. We don't have to be anxious about it. But that's kind of easier said than done, isn't it?"

04The Key That Unlocks Peace

The verse does not just say "stop worrying." It says "seek the kingdom of God above all else." The peace comes with a condition — not a transactional one, but a directional one. Where are you looking?

If your eyes are fixed on the economy, you will be anxious when the markets dip. If your eyes are fixed on your health, every symptom becomes a crisis. If your eyes are fixed on your relationships, every conflict feels existential.

But if your primary orientation is towards God — his character, his promises, his track record — then the circumstances lose their power to define your emotional state. Not because the circumstances change, but because the framework through which you interpret them changes.

"Notice the whole deal starts with seeking the right things. It starts with seeking the kingdom of God, or God's way of doing things. When you get that right, the worry starts to lose its grip."

This is not toxic positivity or spiritual denial. It is a reorientation of attention. The problems are still real. The uncertainty is still there. But the person facing them is standing on different ground.

05Question Two — Is My Future Any Good

The second question the talk addressed was more personal. It is not just "what will happen?" but "will it be good?"

Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

It is important to understand the context. Jeremiah was writing to Jewish exiles in Babylon. They had lost their homeland, their temple, their way of life. They were captives in a foreign empire. And God said to them: I have not forgotten you. I have plans for you. And those plans are good.

"That's quite incredible when you think about who he's talking to. These are people who have lost everything. And God says: I still have good plans for you."

The promise is not that life will be comfortable or pain-free. The exiles remained in Babylon for seventy years. Many of them died there. But God's definition of "good" is bigger than our definition of "comfortable." His plans operate on a timescale and with a scope that we cannot see from where we are standing.

06What Jesus Said About Difficult Times

Mark 13 does not pretend that the future will be easy. Jesus was explicit about hardship: wars, persecution, betrayal, natural disasters. He told his followers that they would be arrested, brought before authorities, and hated because of him.

But woven through all of that was a thread of reassurance. "Do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit." And: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."

The future contains difficulty. Jesus did not pretend otherwise. But the future also contains God. And the consistent message throughout Mark 13 is that nothing that happens catches God off guard. He is not scrambling to respond to events. He is sovereign over them.

"The question isn't really whether difficult things will happen. They will. The question is whether we face them alone or with God. And the whole message of Mark 13 is: you are not alone."

07The Trap of Trying to Predict

One interesting thread in the talk was about the human desire to know the specifics. The disciples wanted a timeline. When will this happen? What are the signs? Give us the details so we can prepare.

Jesus gave some general indicators but then said something that cuts against the entire prediction industry: "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."

We are not meant to know the future in detail. And the obsessive attempt to figure it out — whether through prophecy charts, political analysis, or anxious scenario planning — is itself a form of the worry Jesus told us to avoid.

"There's a real temptation to try and map out every possible future scenario. But Jesus basically says: that's not your job. Your job is to be faithful today, seek God today, love people today. The future is in his hands."

That is simultaneously freeing and frustrating. Freeing because it releases us from the impossible burden of controlling what we cannot control. Frustrating because we really, really want to know.

08Living in the Tension

The practical challenge is learning to live in the space between "I don't know what is coming" and "I know who holds the future." That is not a comfortable place. It requires a daily choice to trust rather than worry, to seek rather than scheme, to pray rather than panic.

The talk offered three practical anchors for people struggling with anxiety about the future.

First, start the day with God. Before checking the news, before opening emails, before the anxiety of the day has a chance to set in — spend time in prayer and scripture. Not as a religious duty, but as an act of orientation. Point yourself towards God before the world points you towards fear.

Second, practise gratitude. Anxiety is almost always future-focused. Gratitude is present-focused. When you deliberately notice and thank God for what is good today, it interrupts the cycle of catastrophic thinking.

Third, stay connected to community. Anxiety thrives in isolation. The voices in your head at three in the morning are much louder when there is nobody else to offer perspective. Share your fears with people you trust. Let them remind you of what is true when you cannot see it for yourself.

09A Future You Cannot See

The disciples who asked Jesus about the future in Mark 13 could not have imagined what their lives would become. They would endure hardship, yes. But they would also see the risen Jesus. They would receive the Holy Spirit. They would build a movement that changed the world. Their future was better and harder and bigger than anything they could have predicted.

The same may well be true for you.

What would change in the way you approach this week if you genuinely believed that God has good plans for your future — not comfortable plans, but genuinely good ones? And what is the one thing you are worrying about that you could choose, today, to hand over?

look forward with trepidation to see what that might be this week um so thank you nicola please feel at home please feel welcome with us we hope you really enjoy yourself this afternoon get involved as much as you want to and let us without further ado here from the lovely matt edmondson do do you ever think about your future do you wonder what it holds you know for you maybe for your family for the rest of the world well that is what we are going to get into today so stick around as we look at the teachings of jesus that talk about your future what is in it and whether or not it's going to be good now we are in mark's gospel chapter 13 where jesus and his disciples are leaving the temple and they're heading outside and as they head outside one of his disciples said to him look teacher what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings now the disciple here is talking about the temple that was in jerusalem at the time it was a magnificent building even by today's standards right josephus a jewish historian at the time of christ noted that would whatever was not overlaid with gold was purest white i mean herod himself donated a vine for one of its decorations and its grape clusters were as tall as a man i mean that's a lot of gold right and some of these white stones that josephus talks about were like 12 meters by about five five or six meters wide i mean they were massive and if you need that in old money that's about 37 foot by about 18 foot right it was solid and it was magnificent this building this structure this impenetrable impenetrable who's going to move a stone that size right so jesus's reply uh to the disciples would i think be a little bit shocking jesus told them that the temple would be destroyed every single stone including that massive one right despite its size despite its strength and its splendor it would be destroyed and you know what it was about 40 years after this conversation that jesus has with his disciples the romans destroyed the temple in response to a large jewish revolt and according to josephus it was an absolute massacre by the roman army so this prophecy of jesus this this prediction that the temple is going to be destroyed well i think it causes the disciples to sort of wonder about the future a little if something's so splendid so magnificent so full of god's glory so strong and so big if that can be destroyed where not even one stone happens what can we be sure of and so they start to think about the future exactly what is it is good that's going to happen and so mark records quite a long message of jesus's predictions and prophecies about the future you see the disciples ask him about it and so the rest of mark chapter 13 you see jesus's answer now traditionally we have gone through these uh chapters kind of like verse by verse and pulled stuff apart which has been great but we're not going to do that today we're just going to pick out a couple of key points it's quite a long chapter but i do want you to i do want to encourage you please do read mark chapter 13. if you've never read the bible if you don't have a bible if you don't know how to find mark chapter 13 the easiest way is just literally go to google and type chapter 13 and it will come up it will come up with websites like biblegateway.com that put the bible for free online and you can read it so do have a read you see for me mark chapter 13 as i read this and i was sort of getting in the mindset of the disciples thinking about the this whole conversation that jesus sort of has with his disciples i think brings up two very key questions that i think actually we all ask i know i do question number one what does my future hold and question number two is it any good right now as a species we have a real unique ability we can think in different time zones we can think about the past we can think about the present and we can think about the future and we can understand those and how we think about the future well that's critical as well right scientists apparently call this prospection right how we think about the future so what does the bible say about prospection what does the bible say about the future what does it say about my future and your future well in one of the most quoted verses of the bible jesus said this seek the kingdom of god above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need so don't worry about tomorrow wow i mean that's an incredible verse of scripture isn't it you don't have to worry about tomorrow i don't know about you i find it incredibly easy to worry about tomorrow i can worry about business you know my company and the money and all of that sort of stuff i think it's easy to worry about tomorrow given the fact that we're all in lockdown and with covid we can easily worry about a great many things to do with our future will i be enough will i have enough what will my health be like will i be alone but jesus tells us something quite radical doesn't he he tells us that we don't have to worry about the future we don't have to worry about tomorrow that's quite incredible we don't have to be anxious about it but that's kind of easier said than done isn't it i mean all right how do i do that jesus well notice the key to this notice the whole deal starts with seeking the right things it starts with seeking the kingdom of god or god's way of doing things you know how god does it god's ways god's plans god's ideas we start there is if we spend time seeking and building wealth well guess what we're going to worry about tomorrow i know plenty of very wealthy people they'll worry about tomorrow we've seen how with a click of a simple finger pensions can be hard in value and our job security can be thrown away because of a virus and you know what wealth isn't a bad thing i'm not i don't think it's a bad thing i hope it's not a bad thing but out of balance out of position if it's the main thing we seek then i think we spend a lot of time in life worrying we worry about the future but when we learn to seek god when we seek him first guess what we learn that we can trust him we can trust him for our tomorrow we start to worry less about the future because we have faith in the god of tomorrow the god who who knew the end from the beginning as he slugged the worlds into existence right we can trust that he will guide us we can trust that he has a plan for us we can trust that he has a purpose for each of us for you for me which is awesome but is that purpose is that plan good well that's a great question isn't it because first we have to i guess define what good means but maybe that's a topic for another day but is it good you have an idea of what that means and i think there are two time frames that we have to look at in order to answer this question okay the first time frame that i think we need to look at is our future on earth as we live out of days here on earth right the second time frame is maybe the not so secret weapon of being a christian let's call that eternity so we've got a time on earth and we've got eternity to look at so let's look at our time here on earth first let's look at that a little bit more now in mark chapter 13 jesus let me tell you he is unnervingly honest about the future he is brutal in some respects he talks about famines and wars and brother turning on brother he talks about natural disasters and persecution he talks about pain and suffering i mean it's a far cry from the come to jesus and your life will be just peachy kind of vision that has sometimes been sold by the church it's a far cry from the self-help gurus and self-help doctrine you know that says if only i can see it and conceive it and believe it i can have it oh yes jesus paints a very different picture he talks of struggle which well let's just be real that's not very sexy is it it just isn't and i think we can all agree with the idea that life can be a struggle we've all experienced struggle i remember when josh was first born it's going back 19 years now um but i remember when he was first born within a within a few months of him being born i was without a job we had the new baby and we i had large amounts of debts so we struggled financially we know what it's like to struggle financially like you i've had to deal with grief and loss and even betrayal right i've had to deal with sickness both in me and within family members and not been able to solve problems that i would like i've had to deal with the complex life questions so jesus is clear about the struggle so what does he tell us to do what advice does he give us knowing that all of this stuff is going to happen in the future and the first thing that he talks about in the midst of all this struggle the he gives us is to work hard at making sure that we are not led astray or deceived which i don't know about you it's just a little bit surprising to me i don't know if i expected that to be the first thing that he talked about but he did and i think this sort of going astray and being deceived we talked about it a number of a couple of weeks ago it's kind of like if you picture a herd of sheep and one of them just sort of goes astray and it's kind of easy for that person to get picked off right and this can happen in a number of ways i think we can face toxic levels of hardship in life you know and i've said i you know i've seen this in the lives of many people and i i'm in utter awe at their capacity to endure right and it leads us to question why god would allow suffering why doesn't he do something about it and this question can cause many people to go astray because the truth is there aren't always easy kind of one line you know the instagram worthy answers that we can latch on to we have to wrestle with some stuff and sometimes we have to do that for many years maybe you've had to do that for many years but that's not the only way we can go astray it's not the only way we can be deceived it can be much more subtle i think for most of us it's a bit like you know the sea beaten against a rock eventually the rock is worn away because of the relentless uh wave crashing and the relentless promotion of culture and values that are not biblical i think they can cause us to wonder from the truth to slowly move away to drift away and christianity if it's anything is a constant cause correction right which is why i think it's so important for our spiritual health to stay connected with each other and to challenge each other to stay connected with church to read our bible to pray and do those constant course corrections of course you know life isn't all that bad is it i mean thank you jesus there there is some shining glimmers of hope there is some good news you see elsewhere in the gospels jesus tells us that he's come to give us life in all its abundance i don't know about i quite like the sound of having abundant life that sounds beautiful to me but abundant life doesn't equal easy problem free life and if there's one thing uh one thing that is clear from today's passage and one thing that i want to be deeply honest with you about especially if you're just starting to explore the christian faith being a christian is not an easy route it is going to demand that you face life head-on with courage and faith now of course regardless of our faith regardless of where we're at we all have to face life we all have to face difficulties it's just that as a christian i believe that he is with me as i face life and that i can draw on his strength for the courage and faith that i need i can look beyond me and that is a game changer as far as i'm concerned you see jesus in this passage talks about how the disciples are actually going to be rejected and beaten i mean that does not sound great i i don't want that right i just don't but then jesus talks about how in the midst of that god will still work out his plans and his purposes and that they will stand before kings and bear witness to him i mean that's incredible right i mean the truth is that god can often change circumstances and events and he does it's why we pray he heals he delivers he brings freedom he can transform laws and nations but it is also true that god might not deliver you out of something but he might deliver you through something maybe there are some kings that he wants you to stand before and this is the route to get to them he might not always transform the event in our lives but he will definitely transform you and me in that if we just let him now as i said this is easier said than done it's not a particularly sexy easy message is it uh and it's if i'm honest with you this this relentless trust of god that i can trust him for tomorrow and not worry about tomorrow despite what i see going on around me well it's a truth that i have to consistently remind myself of let me tell you it's one of the things that i probably journal about more than anything now here's the thing and it is an important thing right we have to think in two time zones the first as i said is our time here on earth the second one though well that's eternity have we lost the art christians of thinking in the realms of eternity you see as christians we believe that life on earth is just the beginning jesus talks a lot about heaven he talks about the resurrection he talks about eternity now i don't know you but as a christian i can often forget that i can get so caught up in the day-to-day you know in the noise in my head how many of you know what i'm talking about do you mean what is or is not happening at the moment with lockdown or in brexit and in my business you know i can get so shut up in this stuff that i forget to lift my head and put it all in context ultimately i'm gonna be in heaven i am an eternal being and that is the remarkable hope that i have and it's beautiful right the bible tells us that the hope we have is an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast this hope is sure and steadfast i mean sure the temple looked short and steadfast if you follow me but it wasn't really it's only god that is short and steadfast and it's there we should put out hope that's why we don't have to worry about tomorrow hope anchors our soul what a beautiful phrase that is hope anchors our soul does your soul feel anchored is it sure and steadfast or does your soul kind of feel like it's adrift lost and unsure hope our eternal hope anchors our soul oh it's great stuff isn't it i mean so what does my future hold well i don't know the details but i do know that god has a plan and that i don't have to worry about it especially when my life is in balance my long-term future is heaven and that hope hank anchors me in today revelation says this that he will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore for the former things have passed away i mean that sounds pretty good to me right you see there is coming a day where god does stop the pain and he stops the suffering he does do something and this is one point that we cannot escape from one point that jesus keeps coming back to time and time again and is is this our story has an insanely good ending this is the not so secret weapon of christianity it is the ultimate perspective when we think about the future we can think of heaven where there is no more tears where there is no more pain and at the end of our time here on earth wherever that be whenever that be and through whatever we have faced we have this enduring hope that heaven awaits the place that is pain free where those who were unable to walk can run down the streets and slide along in their socks on the pure gold that covers them it's in that place where the lonely are in family where the colors are constant and the hope is real that's what awaits us that's the end of the story is heaven whatever that is and whatever it looks like i for one cannot wait for it now i often forget about heaven i'm often so focused on the here and now that i forget to lift my head up and see the bigness of god and the glorious eternity that awaits so what does my future hold i don't know but god has a plan some of it i know most of it i don't but i can trust him is it good well it's going to be good on earth it's going to be struggle on earth but ultimately when i think about heaven is it good you betcha it's good brilliant thanks matt wow loads to kind of take in there um lots and lots to think about so we're going to have a moment to just think while we play a worship song please you know join in if you know it but if not then just let the words kind of wash over you and have a little think about some of the things that matt said we'd love you to put any questions that you've got anything you want us to discuss anything you want to ask put those into the comments and we would love to be able to talk around those things as well i can see some people already are doing that so that's brilliant please pop in your thoughts and comments as well that'd be amazing right the song that we we've got today is called graves into gardens and this is a really interesting idea because this is about god taking those things that are really sad and um the bad sort of things in our lives and and changing them and making them good and so some of the lyrics are things like shame into glory ashes to beauty mourning to dancing and that's that's what god does that's the idea of this song so let's get into that now and then matt and i will be back for a discussion afterwards i searched the world but it couldn't fill me man's empty praise and treasures that fade are never enough then you came along and put me back together but every desire is now satisfied here in your love oh there's nothing better than you there's nothing better than you lord there's nothing nothing is better than you i'm not afraid to show you my weakness lord you've seen them all and you still call me forever cause the god of the mountain is the god of the valley there's not a place your mercy and grace won't find me again oh this nothing better [Applause] nothing is better you turn on into dancing you give beauty for ashes you turn shame into glory you're the only one you care you turn praise into gardens you turn seas into highways you're the only one who care you're the only one who cares okay so let's hope i think we had a bit of an internet outage there so i'm hoping that this has kind of fixed it let me know in the comments if you can see what's going on uh because it's telling me it's fixed it but i'm not sure if it has or not blast give me uh just give me a nod in the comments if you can see what's going on let me bring silent let me uh just comment in the comments oh there we go no idea what happened there no idea we can hear you good very good oh there we go okay twice yeah i've got you on jewel we don't need that slight technical hitch there thank you for your grace and bearing with us we really appreciate that absolutely brilliant song that's lovely um really really kind of key to what we're saying at the moment isn't it about god's grace for us um now sadly the comments have gone so if you put up something before if you put um oh thanks yeah someone's just saying they love my pen look at that um sorry if you put in a question or a comment before that's more important than how awesome my pen is um then please pop that in now so that we can have a little chat and we can kind of talk about the things that you want to talk about as well because you know matt and i can waffle on and chat about the things that we want to talk about but we'd love to kind of have your we're good at waffling on i feel some of us are some of us i'm not i'm not saying which one um yes brilliant okay thanks matt matt that was a really really great talk loads to think about there um loads of really big ideas i think that you that you kind of went over hmm yeah there were there were a few there you touched on a few yeah yeah it's just when you try and do a whole chapter in one talk you're gonna have to hit on a few big things aren't you really um it's just yeah it's just the way it's gonna go uh and so yeah it's um it was fun though it was fun oh has it gone down again i'm i don't know is is there are there problems people tell us are there problems are there problems are we down again if you're sticking with us then you are brilliant thank you so much if you are sticking with us through this and because i know it's it's difficult to keep that train of thought isn't it when we keep glitching and things but um you know matt i always used to find it really hard this sort of thing talking about heaven and i just i just couldn't comprehend it and i kind of imagined all of this sort of um you know clouds and harps and all that kind of stuff and i just had babies yeah i thought it doesn't really sound that great and i'm supposed to be getting really excited about this and i'm supposed to you know be really sort of looking forward to this and it and it doesn't sound that great and then i kind of spoke to someone who was a little bit more real about it and kind of said what you know imagine what would be your sort of best day on earth what would be the best thing that you enjoyed doing the people that you enjoyed spending it with imagine it was a million times better than that imagine um this world as it was meant to be this world without pain this world without suffering um and that that kind of really helped me un understand a lot more um about heaven yeah it's a big one isn't it how do you think about eternity how do you think about heaven what is that because you know the way it is portrayed a little bit in some of you know some of the the ideology that we have it doesn't you can be honest it doesn't sound interesting do i mean it's kind of like why is there any fun and so you then get all these sort of statements don't you are how's going to be a lot more fun than heaven and stuff like that and you kind of think we've missed the picture if that's the way we end up thinking we've misunderstood something somewhere and we've we've actually misunderstood the key heart of god and and what god is like if we think that god's the sort of the boring one and the one that doesn't want us to have any fun and all that you know we've completely misunderstood who god is if that's what we think yeah absolutely no we totally have and so i mean i read a few of the verses you know like jesus talks about abundant life well that's that's in heaven as it is on earth right and um you know jesus talked about when we when we pray pray god your will be done on earth as it is in heaven in other words heaven is much better jeremy and we're we're trying to get what's there down on earth with our prayers and i think that scripture we read in revelations about there's just no more pain there's no more tears there's no more struggle there's no more suffering yeah absolutely absolutely i'm looking forward to it nicholas put in the comments i'm looking forward to having a body that's healed and that that's massive isn't it when you're if you're someone that deals with um sickness and pain in your life then to kind of know that there is a time when that won't be the case is is amazing um and i know it's a massive one now as i say it's a massive one because we talk about the topic of feeling quite a lot and we we believe as a church we believe as a group of christians that actually when we pray god can heal us and we still believe that god does do miraculous healings but we know that people still live with pain for many years um despite many prayers you know and there is this real split going on but like you're saying as nicholas said ultimately irrespective of what happens here on earth there will be a day when the pain stops jeremy and and uh i love that analogy of sliding down the streets in your socks jeremy in the streets of heaven just uh for people that couldn't walk you know and they're going to be able to do all these kind of crazy things um and so sometimes it happens you know we pray and we see the miracles here but just because we don't see them here doesn't mean they're not going to eventually happen yeah yeah i think um i you know i've talked a lot about my mum dying young and um when she she had a lot of lung problems and so found you know difficult to breathe and that she was walking i just imagined her sort of running in heaven and like being free to be able to do those things that she couldn't she couldn't do here which was pretty amazing she was really really unmusical but she always wanted she always wanted to play the cello dream of hers but she was like really kind of a musical she couldn't even clap in time and things like that and i imagine you know i imagine her with this kind of ability you know this kind of god-given ability to just play on the cello and kind of you know just things like that just really help me to kind of put in perspective what it might actually be like i wrote down a quote actually by an author that i really like called paul young and he says earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal i really like that that's a great quote yeah that is a great quote and when you said you've got a quote there by an author paul young i have to be honest maybe showing my age i was thinking of the singing yeah this thing i like yeah yeah wherever i lay my hat paul young song go on matt name yeah absolutely wherever i lay my hat and i couldn't see me that's my home yeah yeah i would go for it but no i think it's i think it's a really fascinating one i think heaven is just is more than just a comfort for those um that have lost someone i mean it is a great comfort you know i had to take my um let's take my uncle's funeral last year um and that's a tricky thing to do you know and you talk about the hope of the resurrection you talk about the hope of heaven um and and you know we i talked about how he was um he was a big football fan uh sheffield united fan and there's this beautiful passage in hebrews that talks about how in heaven we have this great cloud of witnesses it talks about this great cloud of witnesses which surround us and the picture it uses is kind of like the coliseum you know where you're doing all these races and athletic things on the floor and and the guys in the stand and the women in the stand and the angels and everybody they're all just cheering you on like yes you can do this you've got and it's this beautiful analogy and it i can just see my uncle in those stands you know like he was at a football match i can see him in those stands and heaven is a beautiful thing to think about when you have to when you think about loved ones and lost ones but i know i'm heading there and it and there's and i it's like i just said in the talk sometimes i forget that and sometimes i forget that i am an eternal being sometimes i'm so focused on here and now that i forget that actually this awaits um yeah that's a massive thing about it yeah that is a massive challenge when life is so busy and you know we're we're really just constantly from all sides thinking about different things it is it's hard to keep in that perspective i think also we need to kind of make the point that we're not saying that you shouldn't feel sorrow or you know you shouldn't kind of feel it of course it's horrible to be sick it's horrible to be to live with a chronic illness to lose family and friends those things are awful and god isn't sort of saying oh you know don't worry i'll be fine um it you know he has compassion he jesus himself went through much sorrow in his life um and he's with us in that and he understands that and that's being human that is absolutely fine but having that hope makes it i don't have to say more bearable but certainly it it helps yeah no i totally agree it totally helps and it um you're right there's there's this and i hope i bought this out in the talk there's this real dichotomy between life now which is both good and struggle and it's this real you know constant challenge we need faith and we need courage and and all these things to make it through and and you know god answers prayer but sometimes we've got to we wrestle with things for a while god doesn't always you know zap us here and there and it's there's this there is this tension uh but on the other side of that there is this heaven that we have to look forward to this hopeless eternity uh and it's great it is fantastic what's nicola put here um but in the pain i get to witness to people in the same place and yeah it's true actually and this was so sorry nicholas put in the comments here the fact that she is in pain and sometimes she struggles but in that she gets to do amazing things and you this is what we talked about in that passage where the disciples you know they were sort of rejected and cut cut off by their people by the jews the jewish leaders they were beaten in the synagogues and i mean all kinds of bad things happened yeah but in the midst of that it talked about how they um would stand before kings jeremy and even in the midst of all this horror and tragedy god was still able to make something good come out of it i don't think for one minute god calls a horror in the tragedy tragedy but i do think that in the midst of it something quite extraordinary happened and they got to stand before kings and um and that was one of the questions you know maybe god's got some kings for us to stand before i don't yeah i don't know but it's um it's it's a it's a fascinating one it is i'm still i'm still waiting for nicolas um important question of the day so if you could put that in the comments for us please nichola so that we can um we can discuss that before we need to move on i'm sure it's really i'm sure it's really important but now you're right it's a real deep thing yeah yeah yeah well while she's busy typing that um can i talk sal quickly about table top uh table talk something we call in table talking new features that we're bringing yeah so what we want to do is bring back a little bit this idea that we had a few months ago something between sunday but this idea of thinking um about some specific questions based around the talk and talking about those questions around the table like sitting down um after the service or some point during the week with your friends with your family or on zoom or whatever go asking a simple question what do you think about heaven what what kind of ideas do you have about heaven what do we understand by heaven and just thinking that through what do we think about this idea that life here on earth is a bit of a struggle so what we're going to do is we're going to take these table top questions and we're going to put them on instagram and facebook we'll put them on social media and you can have a conversation about those and then at some point during the week there'll be a video where one of us also talks about those questions and just brings our answers so just keep an eye on that from social media now we've done that little notice lovely thanks matt now on to more important is a hot dog a sandwich this is a very important question and i want to say i'm sorry no i'm with you because i don't i don't want it to be a sandwich i don't like the idea of it being a sandwich so no well i don't think it's a sandwich a hot dog's in a bun and a sandwich is bread if you had a roll with ham in it would that not be a sandwich no that's the bread roll that's a ham roll so a sandwich can only be a sandwich because it's a slice of bread slices of bread no because someone's about to catch me up as my excuse for saying this what about a baguette what about our baguettes with steak in it is that a sandwich sandwich wouldn't you yeah you would i get screwed but you know what i'm still going to say yeah you see gemma orange just said the same thing sandwiches sliced bread yeah so no hot dog is not a sandwich no i'm not going to get into bombs and bats move on let us move on massive discussion about that um right so thank you for all your comments and everything that's been really really interesting and i hope the discussions carry on through the week we're going to go into our next part of our service this afternoon which is our catch up with josh edmo yeah now you're going to have to fundamentally bear with me a second while i set this up because i've only just got the ketchup video oh man yeah let's have a look what sharon says whilst you're doing that josh tells us a sandwich has to have two pieces of so if the roll is cut into two the hot dog is a sandwich no josh you're wrong sorry um is that oh we're calling it a roll if it's in a baguette mat not a sandwich so okay that's how gemma's letting you get out of that one um thanks gemma i appreciate that i'm not gonna understand what her last comment is are we ready for the catch up please yeah i think we're ready now wait before it gets to before we go hello and welcome to this week's sunday ketchup did i say ketchup or ketchup ketchup this is freaking me out i've done it a few times and it sounded like welcome to this week's sunday catch up for those of you who don't know me allow me to introduce myself my name is josh edmondson i am a student at the university of saint andrews studying physics and i am a member of the team here at crowd church if this is your first time with us excellent it's great to have you here let me just quickly explain what catch-up is so every week we get in pictures and videos from members of the community and we put them together in this little segment called catch up or you'll just get to see what everyone else has been doing throughout the week in usual fashion i will kick things off so this is my second week back at university for semester two things are starting to ramp up a bit more it's it's like week one is all very introductory stuff getting you back into it week two tutorials and examples classes start to kick in you're getting more work and week three labs kicks in so you know it's getting all kinds of busy now i've been trying to find the best ways to watch and take notes on lectures i take notes when watching the lecture like a good student but the issue is right i've been taking notes using these exercise books so i'd watch the lecture and then afterwards i would go through the lecture notes and sort of get down all the things that i thought were important unfortunately it's one of those cases where everything is important you quite quickly spend a very long time as a solution to this i've tried using microsoft onenote this week i've actually really enjoyed this it means i don't have to rewrite everything out i have all the notes here i can access them on my phone as well which is pretty nice but it also means that if you know i have an idea or there's something that i think is quite interesting i can just draw a little arrow off to the side and then hey presto you know i can draw like a diagram and then do some calculations so if any students are watching this i would recommend trying one note for taking those string lectures you know if you get given pdfs that you can annotate having said that i haven't actually saved any time but you know it's a presence it's a journey i'll get there someday maybe possibly we'll see we'll see what happens that's enough for me let's get on to the catch-up clips great thank you very much for sending all those in i really enjoy watching all the catch-up stuff if you would like to have your video or picture featured on ketchup send in your stuff a new whatsapp number or through the hashtag that's all from me thank you very much for watching and i will catch you next time brilliant thank you there we go josh has just learned a very important lesson yeah important bless him in terms of his audio mixing it's all right well done josh thanks for putting it together how cute is the oranges new dog dixie i know dixie i noticed a severe lack of cat pictures today and we now have the dogs in my opinion is much better i was raining it back on the cat pictures because i just don't want people to be you know fed up so next week i'll only show the all the cat pictures that you've been missing but yeah we're loving dick the dog thanks for that gemma cat's first dog that was that a sandwich that fish finger thing oh yeah yeah that was yeah the fish finger thing we made yesterday i made fish fingers amazing did you put a sandwich though on instagram oh did it that's your own rules that you've just broken there yeah i do that all the time though okay it looks good anyway it looks good i like what trevor wrote actually he said a hot dog is the best thing since sliced bread oh yeah a great dad joke there well done travis we love that um yeah um nicholas says a hot dog is a sausage sandwich no no it's just wrong hot dog's a hot dog what's wrong with you yeah yeah so just a couple of things to mention before we finish then um matt crew did say in the comments as well but i wanted to mention on here that we do have a wednesday evening smaller group if you wanted to kind of get together and chat about some of these things that we talk about on a sunday and there's a group called disciple which you can get involved with via zoom um and you can either send us a message on the whatsapp number say that you're interested to come and we'll send you the link or you can go onto our website and you can sign up through that there look as if by magic there's the whatsapp number um so do come along to that if you'd like to talk a bit more it'd be lovely to meet you um apart from that anything else we need to say matt uh apparently gemma was laughing about josh's comments here about using microsoft onenote she can just about use word i i totally agree i can't use onenote either that whole second segment of onenote was just totally lost on me yeah it looked good i wondered if he was getting some commission or something but no he was just an affiliate brilliant brilliant yeah keep in touch with us do send us a message if there's anything you know if we can pray for you or anything like that that you would like through the week do send a message on the whatsapp do you get in touch via our website but apart from that i think that's it from us today isn't it matt it is thank you so much for
